Nivcharot CEO Esty Shushan was a guest of the tenth episode of Dr. Jeremy Fogel’s popular podcast The Radical. In the interview, Esty shares her experiences as the eldest daughter growing up in a family of eleven children in Tzfat. She speaks about the challenges of being a girl, having to take care of her siblings and not having a childhood per se. She tells her story and how she established Nivcharot and gives her take on burning issues in the Haredi community today, such as the study of core subjects, the Haredi draft, and more.

Some quotes:

On the Haredi community: “The essence of being Haredi is to be, in some sense, against. Against the stream, against what everyone else thinks, there is something very anarchistic, rebellious in this society. Even when it doesn’t need to protect itself any more from the Enlightenment, it continues to be suspicious, isolated, and different. “

On being discriminated against as a girl: “ I once asked my father to teach me Gemara. He opened the book, taught me for a few minutes then abruptly closed the book and said, ‘Too bad you are not a boy.’”
